Hold the cup by the handle with your thumb and forefinger. When drinking coffee, hold the cup by the handle with your right hand and gently support the saucer with your left. Slowly bring the cup to your lips and sip gently, without making any noise. Avoid gripping the cup tightly with your hands, gulping down the coffee, or bending your head to drink.

Coffee cups are generally made of either earthenware or porcelain. Recognizing the importance of drinking coffee hot, cup makers have even developed earthenware cups with good heat retention, and even bone china cups, which are superior to porcelain cups. Bone china cups, containing animal bone ash, allow the coffee to cool down more slowly.

The color of the coffee cup is also quite important. To best showcase the characteristics of the coffee, a white-lined cup is best.

When choosing a coffee cup, consider your type of coffee and drinking style, as well as your personal preferences and the occasion. Porcelain coffee cups are more suitable for milder coffees; earthenware coffee cups are better suited for stronger coffees. Also, coffees with a high milk content, such as lattes, are best enjoyed from a mug.
