The Numbers: Why Most Popular Bottles Don't Fit

Let's start with the standard car cup holder. According to industry data, most factory-installed cup holders in North American and European vehicles manufactured since 2010 have an internal diameter between 2.5 and 3.5 inches. The most common size is around 3 inches. Some vehicles go up to 3.5 inches, but many are narrower - especially in sedans and compact cars.

If you're sourcing or manufacturing drinkware for the North American market, cup holder compatibility isn't a nice-to-have - it's becoming a must-have. Here's why:

First, the complaint is ubiquitous. From Reddit to Amazon reviews to YouTube comments, "doesn't fit in cup holder" is one of the most consistent negative feedback points across virtually every major brand. Solving it differentiates you immediately.
